What is the October 30 2023 election for barangay and SK?
A total of 672,432 seats are up for grabs for the October 30 electoral exercise. More than 1.41 million people have filed their candidacies, including 828,644 candidates for the barangay council, and 585,843 candidates for the Sangguniang Kabataan.
What is the Supreme Court decision on barangay election 2023?
On late June 2023, the Supreme Court struck down Republic Act (RA) 11935, the law postponing the election, as unconstitutional, declaring that "the law unconstitutionally exceeds the bounds of the Congress' power to legislate."
2023 Philippine barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections
Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) in the Philippinesare scheduled to be held on October 30, 2023. The barangay, commonly translated as "village", is the smallest government authority in the country. The election shall elect the barangay captain (the chief executive of the barangay) and seven of eight members of the Sangguniang Barangay (barangay council) in 42,027 barangays throughout the country.
Elections for the reformed Sangguniang Kabataan (SK; youth councils) will also be held at the same time. The youth shall elect among themselves an SK chairperson, who will automatically serve as an ex officio member of the Sangguniang Barangay, and seven SK councilors in each barangay.
The elections were originally scheduled to be held in May 2020. In December 2019, a law was passed postponing the election to December 2022. In October 2022, another law was passed, this time canceling the election for October 2023. However, the Supreme Court declared this law unconstitutional; the election will still proceed as scheduled, but the winners will serve until 2025, with the following election being held that year and every three years thereafter.
